Catching Up With Grant
We caught up with Grant post surf session to ask him about his surf history, The Costa Mesa Surf Club, and what he’s been listening to!
Explain The Costa Mesa Surf Club
The Costa Mesa Surf Club is kinda like the zone to hangout for Newport kids……some think that it’s a brand (I mean yeah they do sell shirts and Surfboards) but it’s more of a spot to bring a beer and lunch and sit down and talk story with they guys working.
How long have you been surfing and what inspired you to start?
I think I stood up on a surfboard for the first time when I was like 5…it was just one of those things where mom casually pushed me in and it was whatever….I really got into it in high school and started shaping and really enjoying it.
How did you get into shaping surfboards and how long does the process usually take?
The shaping things pretty funny! At the time not many people where in the DIY movement so we just went for it, shaped glassed, all in the same spot….funny to think I did 19 boards, they turned out pretty bad and then Tanner Prairie and Tanner Barrett took me under their wing and showed me the path. To this day I can grind out a log in like 2 hours.
What are some of your favorite spots to eat/ things to do in Newport Beach?
I love the most ghetto Mexican Restaurants hahahaha but lately been making a bunch of meals at home….nothing beats a meal like mom used to make. But other than that in my off time there’s a lot of eating going on, a couple cool skateparks in the area and a bunch of friends that are always making art and hanging out.
Where is the best place you’ve surfed and tell us a little bit about the trip?
One of my favorites was Costa Rica last year. Waves weren’t the best but being with some of my favorite people from the RVCA team was sick! Strom totaled a minivan, the most fun night-life in Tamarindo, and warm fun waves.
