Penny for a Purpose X The Tony Hawk Foundation

Penny Skateboards Tony Hawk Foundation 3

Penny recognizes the importance of supporting the youth of the world and giving back to those in need. We have supported different organizations through the years whether it be local schools raising money to help make education affordable for all their students, supporting organizations dedicated to recycling worn out boards or providing skateboards for camps servicing at-risk kids in urban environments.

As part of our continued focus on giving back to the skate community, Penny has created “Penny For A Purpose”. The goal is to partner with global non-profits and iconic artists to bring awareness to the communities they impact, support projects they run and encourage hope through skateboarding with young people all over the world. This season we have teamed up with Tony Hawk and Birdhouse Skateboards to support The Tony Hawk Foundation. A portion of proceeds from each PennyX Tony Hawk board sold will be donated to help them in their mission.

The Tony Hawk Foundation seeks to foster lasting improvements in society, with an emphasis on supporting and empowering youth. Through special events, grants, and technical assistance, the Foundation supports recreational programs focusing on the creation of public skateboard parks in low-income communities, and other causes in the US and overseas. The Foundation favors programs that clearly demonstrate that funds received will produce tangible, ongoing, positive results.

Since the start of The Tony Hawk Foundation, 572 skatepark projects in the U.S. have received funding, $5.5-million have been awarded to help create public skateparks, and 5.5-million visitors annually enjoy skateparks that the Tony Hawk Foundation helped fund.

Catching Up With The Founder, Tony Hawk.

We had a chance to learn more about the history of The Tony Hawk Foundation, reasons why he chose to collaborate with Penny, and what Tony has coming up.

How did the Tony Hawk x Penny Skateboards collaboration come to be?

I thought it would be fun to combine my experience and aesthetics to the Penny line. And my daughter’s first board was a pink Penny, so I owed it to her.

How did you pick the classic Full Skull graphic for the collaboration?

It’s an iconic graphic that is synonymous with THPS, so I was excited to bring it back for a new generation of skaters.

Can you explain the history of the Tony Hawk Foundation and its mission?

I started it 15 years ago because I saw how prolific skateboarding had become with a disproportionate amount of facilities for the growing population; especially in challenged area. Our goal is to help provide public skateparks in low-income areas, and  – more importantly – to provide resources to groups and communities that advocate for skateparks in their area.

How does the collection benefit the Tony Hawk Foundation?

Part of the proceeds will go to THF and help fund more skateparks in underprivileged areas. So if you buy one of these boards, you’ll help in the creation of new skateparks.

Your first skateboard at age 9 was a small fiberglass board that very much resembles the Penny Skateboard of today.  Is it a nostalgic feeling to be riding around on a Penny?

Definitely. But I didn’t have the luxury of a kicktail on my first board! So the Penny has more potential.

How is your skating on a Penny board different than a traditional board?

It has a retro feel and is much easier to travel with. You won’t jump any big sets of stairs, but you’ll be able to weave through pedestrians discreetly and store your board almost anywhere.

What is next for you, Tony?

Birdhouse “Saturdays” is our team video that we’ve been working on for nearly three years. It will probably be my last video part and I am beyond excited to release it this fall.
